What My Son Wants For Christmas…

Things in my household are rather hectic right now. I can’t seem to get myself together long enough to plan for the holidays. Yes, the holidays that are coming right up in just a couple of weeks. I have been much more concerned with the “right now” and somehow the “almost here” has crept up and knocked me flat.

Hectic hasn’t been bad. My son has decided that potty training is easy and we’ve been doing well for almost two weeks. It’s only during the day, but we already see the cost savings. We can go shopping without dragging five diapers and a package of wipes. Instead, I drag two pairs of clothes…but, I leave them in the car because we haven’t had to use them yet.

I’ve been checking in with friends, watching the elections (and the results of the elections), catching up at work, and playing with my son. We’ve picked out a big boy bed for my son’s birthday and I’ve been planning the dinner. I hate cooking so I’ve started planning a month in advance so I can make sure I have the easiest menu possible and as much pre-prepared as possible.

Last night, in one of my calmer moments, I was sitting on the bed with my son and we were practicing what he would say to Santa. When we talk about Santa, he’s enthusiastic, but when he sees a picture of Santa he tells me…”I don’t like it…Santa.” (I see another screaming with Santa picture in my near future.) Anyhow, our conversation went something like this:

Mommy: Santa will say…Ho Ho Ho…What do you want for Christmas? What will you say?

Son: I want a police car.

Mommy: Please

Son: I want a police car, please… and a baby.

Mommy: A baby?

Son: A baby, please.

Daddy: Santa doesn’t bring people. Santa brings toys for good boys.

Son: (shrugs) I want a police car and a baby.

Mommy: Daddy is right. Santa brings toys for Christmas.

Son: Okay. I want a police car and cars.

Mommy: (sighs) Please

Hmmm. Isn’t that interesting? We’re not sure if he was asking for a real baby or for another doll. He’s absolutely fascinated with my friend J’s new baby and we just saw them last week. He likes to stroke her arms. He’d really like to touch her face, but my friend convinced him that baby A really likes her arms stroked. After we visited, he took to holding his baby doll just like a real baby and he likes to talk to her using the silly nonsense phrases that we use on real babies. I’m intrigued.
