What I Didn’t See…

This past week-end we traveled to Indiana to see my friend C and her family. I learned two very important things. First, I learned that I will never take a five hour trip in the car ever again without purchasing a portable DVD player. My son is just too young to understand five hours. Second, I learned that the trip down I-75 through Ohio is just as boring as the trip down the Ohio turnpike.

Other than that, once we got there…we had fun. There was plenty of football for my husband (tickets to see the Colts play the Titans), a backyard for my son and time for me to catch up with my friend C. All in all, it was fun. We even went to the Indianapolis zoo and we got to feed giraffes. Now, that isn’t something that you do every day.

One thing that I noticed on this trip was that I didn’t see one family that looked like it was touched by Asian adoption. I realized that this was unusual and then I was a little stunned. When I was growing up, seeing another Asian adoptee was abnormal and now not seeing at least one family was abnormal. How time has changed.

The chances of my son going to school with other international adoptees (Asians and non-Asians) is so much higher now than it was when I was in school. I know it depends on the area that you live in, but it’s been really rare for me to go somewhere that isn’t touched by Asian adoptees (it’s easier for me to see Asian adoptees in public settings). I find it pretty amazing that there are so many of us in the world.
