1327658_the_end_1The end of intercountry adoption from Korea looms on the horizon. It is difficult to watch for the many people who wanted to adopt from this country and have not done so for a number of reasons. Unfortunately, there is no stopping it. Korea is slated to stop their intercountry adoption program in 2012. Since a healthy child adoption from this area takes 2 1/2 – 3 years, the window of opportunity is technically over. There have been a couple people who mentioned that they were (or had spouses who were) citizens of Korea. I do believe that there is time to pursue and complete an adoption given these circumstances. Please check this out fully. I am not privy to all of the Korean adoption information.

Another avenue for adoption from this country would be adopting a Special Needs child. I am not certain what the time frame on an adoption of this nature is but my sources talk about 6 months. Again, research your options.

As Korea looks to close its adoption program, I would love to have you post stories about your adoption memories and experiences. There is a lot of value in taking a trip down ‘memory lane,’ if you will. I am certain that the many readers would love to hear about your experiences with adoption from this country. Feel free to comment on this particular blog or email me and I will post your experiences. Korea has been a valid adoption partner for over 50 years with a large number of adoptions completed in that time. As sentimental as it sounds, I believe that the telling of the good stories and memories is a great tribute to the children (many of them are adults now) that are in our lives due to adoption from this country.

I will continue to monitor the adoption status from this country. They are slated to stop placing children outside of their own country in 2012- ceasing the adoption relationship with all of their partners.
