Some Basic Korean Words and Phrases

If you are interested in learning a little bit of the Korean language, here are some basic Korean phrases to get you started:

***Remember these are just the phonetic versions of the words from the Hangeul language. There is no way to truly translate the Hangeul written language to English.***

• I love you – Sah rahng heh
• I like you – Joh wah heh
• Thank you – Gahm sah hahm nee dah (Seems like a big mouthful for a simple thank you. Isn’t translation fun.)
• Hello – Yoh boh seh yoh
• I am sorry – Mee ahn heh
• Don’t be afraid – Gyen cha nah
• I am happy – Geep buh
• Milk – Woo Yoo
• Water – Mool
• Cookie – Gwah Jah
• Candy – Sah tahng
• Bed – Chim deh
• Family – Ga jok
• Daddy – ahp ba
• Mommy – Uhm Mah
• Brother – Hyung (older); Dong-seng (younger)
• Sister – Uhn nee (older); Dong-seng (younger)
• Son – Ah dul
• Daughter – Daal
• No – An nee oh

Pronunciation Guide:
Ah – as in “open your moth and say “ah””
Oh – as in gopher
Uh – as in sun
Oo – as in moon
Ee – as in east
Eh – as in hen
G or gh – as in “go”
J – as in just
Ch – as in church

Hangeul was created in 1446 as the first Korean alphabet. King Sejong wanted everyone (no matter what their status) to be able to read and write. Hangeul is considered one of the most efficient alphabets in the world. It is also supposed to be very easy to learn.
