My parents are visiting from Ohio. I feel bad because my son seems to have caught a cold and he really isn’t his normal happy self. They have taken him out for a walk so it’s pretty quiet right now. Translation…I have time to sit down and write this post.
My mother is older (but not old) and certainly wiser (but not that wiser). Hi Mom! She went through two Korean adoptions in two different decades. She had barely walked through the door when she told us not to get too caught up in the current Korean adoption slow down. Don’t panic, she says…ride it out and see what happens.
She remembers that, between me and my sister, there was a slow down just like this one. The Korean government made a big push to increase domestic adoption and the international program went on standby. She’s watched the program cycle through this twice now. In other words, she is counseling that before we panic, we should see what happens. Though they have good intentions, ultimately she points out that they still have more babies than they have domestic families.

I’m not saying that everything is going to work out fine and that the program will go back to normal in the a few years. The truth is I hope that domestic adoption does pick up in Korea. Eventually, it would be nice if the international program was able to close completely. I just wanted to share another opinion.
