My son worships at my sister’s feet – quite literally actually. He has a real fetish for her feet. We have several pictures of him checking out my sister C’s feet.
C and her boyfriend, J, came to visit us on New Years Eve and the adoration continued. My son was leading C around by the hand and demanded her undivided attention. I’ve always found his attraction very odd. Not because C doesn’t pay attention to him, but because until this last visit, there really hasn’t been an opportunity to bond. We see them at major holidays and family events, but there are generally many other people around. However, he doesn’t seem to need the time. For my son, the bond was instant and without any complicated requirements.
I was watching my son and C play and I thought what a great thing it is that my son’s aunt is also a Korean adoptee. When we’re talking about being Korean, I always include that Mommy and Aunt C are just like him.

I don’t think that the fact that my sister is Korean is the reason for the bond. He has a similar bond to my cousin’s little very blond daughter and my my mom’s very blond friend, J. Coincidentally, J happens to be the mother of another Korean adoptee, but my son hasn’t seen J’s daughter since he was a baby.
As an adoptive parent and hopefully soon to be adoptive parent again, I find bonds to be a fascinating subject. Isn’t it amazing how bonds form? What make them form the way they do? In some cases, the bond seems to be instant and in other cases they have to be worked for. Sometimes, there is no bond to be formed.
