My Salute To Family

It’s very late and I need to sleep. I was going to say tomorrow is Easter, but I see on my clock that it is already today. My parents are here from Ohio and my sister and her boyfriend will be coming tomorrow for dinner.

I’d love to say that I’m up late because I was preparing a feast for dinner, but the truth is I got interested in my book and I had to finish it. As I was closing my book, I remembered I hadn’t posted anything for tomorrow (actually today). I’m actually a very good cook, but I hate cooking with a passion…so, I avoid it at all costs. My mother asked my two year old son if mommy likes to cook in her new kitchen and my son looked at her like she was a crazy woman. “No,” he said with a shake of his little head. “Daddy cook.” Yes, my two year old is telling on me already.

So, instead of cooking the feast, I routed my husband out of bad early Saturday morning and sent him to Honey Baked Ham Company to pick up my order. One small cooked ham, one small cooked turkey breast, four sides and a dessert – all I have to do is stick them in the oven to heat them up and yahoo! That is my kind of cooking.

Anyhow, cooking aside, getting ready for Easter has had me thinking about family. I admit (a little sheepishly) that Easter has become a little less about religion in my family and a lot more about worshipping the pink bunny. However, above and beyond that, it’s always been about family.

We’ve never been the traditional family…mother, father, sister, brother…with a cat, a dog and a mini-van. Having three Korean adopted children in the family makes us stand out. No one makes the comment that Ann looks just her mother and little Peter looks just like his father. Despite the fact that we’ll never fit into a mold (thank goodness), it does not make us any less of a family.

So, without going into too much detail, since I really need to get to sleep before my son’s five thirty wake-up call…Hurray for family. Hurray for the traditional family and the not so traditional family. Here are to all the people with bonds that transcend blood ties – families with adopted children, families with biological children, families with one parent, families with step-parents, families made up of friends, families with alternative life styles, families with pets, families that sing, families with children who have purple hair… You get the picture. I believe that families come in all shapes in sizes and I say hurray for families!
