As we were making our way to our seats, I was people watching. I do that a lot. I enjoy watching people and watching the way they interact. I think that sociology would have been a subject that I would have enjoyed studying.
Mostly, I was thinking about how many things that we have in common with other people that we don’t even realize. At this one location, I saw so many different types of people, but everyone was there for the same reason – our children.
I listen to NPR every morning before work and every afternoon on my way home. The airwaves have been full of negative reports lately – bombings, fighting, resistance, death, injuries… I often stop and wonder how anyone ever gets along at all because it seems like the smallest spark sets off a huge blaze. Everyone is full of blame for one group or another. I start hearing the two words that make my blood freeze – those people.

At The Wiggles, there was no name calling, no fighting and no political positioning. I saw two little Asian girls walking with their Caucasian mothers. I saw an interracial couple swinging their little boy between them. I saw a Muslim family, the mother in her full traditional dress. I saw an Asian family and a Black family sitting next to each other in the stands. I heard voices speaking all different languages and I heard laughter which is the same in every language.
When the lights went out, it didn’t matter how we looked, how we dressed, how we spoke… At this one place, we got along just fine.
