Is It "Real"ly Necessary?

Okay, as I stated in my last post, I have been in my own private world the last few weeks. I've obviously missed out on the popular culture news. So, when I saw this article on the KAAN newsletter, I was shocked.

I have never watched Survivor, but I have heard the stories and seen the clips on television. I firmly believe that this show may cause some serious damage. If nothing else, it will encourage the popular stereotypes and misconceptions. We know that reality television picks and chooses what we see based on the "WOW" factor and that it is controversy that makes people watch. Actually, I worry less about the actual show and more about what the people watching the show will do.

Already we have people like Rush Limbaugh fanning the flames. The article on Yahoo quotes him as follows:

Hispanics, he said, "have shown a remarkable ability to cross borders" and "will do things other people won't do." Asians, per Limbaugh, are "the best at espionage, keeping secrets." Blacks "lack buoyancy" and are "more likely to drown," while the white man's burden will weigh down the last team with "guilt over the fact that they run things."

I have to say that I find the show to be irresponsible. Though people like to say that racism is not a big deal in the United States any longer, anyone who has faced it will tell you that that isn't true. I expect that after this show, I will hear a lot more of the "those people" comments and "all Asians" comments. I am not looking forward to it and I am not going to watch the show to see what happens. I'm sure I'll hear plenty on the news.

As always, there is always another side and wanted to share that side too.

I wouldn't have watched the show even if they hadn't decided to divide the races. Will you?

Honestly, I am on the fence on this one. It sounds like a bad idea, but.....I can see getting people talking about racial issues might be good.

We love the show though, so, we'll be watching.

I'm on the fence as to whether it's a good idea, too, although I'll definitely be watching. I saw the promo pictures and it's really refreshing to see other than 14 white people, 1 African-American person, and one Asian person competing.
What I don't get is why they took so long to get a little diversity, and then, once they did, they decided that would be the focus of the fist few weeks...I bet it is just for publicity and they only stay in those teams a short while. They're not big enough teams to last too long. The producers will want to mix it up. I give those initial teams maybe 3 weeks.(Can you tell I watch the show?)I'm actually excited about this Survivor (vs. past seasons) because I'm hoping for something different. I'm tired of the same old yoga instructor/ male model mix (although, of course, this new bunch could also be made up of yoga instructors and male models...just of varied ethnicities).
I'm not sure why you think it's going to perpetuate stereotypes - unless people act according to them (and there's no reason to think they will, since people don't).
Anyway, I'm interested to see how it turns out.

I think the ethnic teams are stupid.

But I am a fan of Survivor. I will be watching.

One of the long running complaints about the show is the lack diversity. And the "old woman" or "black man" always leaves first.

Here is another article on this http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14482071/

I love the line

"But does "ethnic pride" really mean the same thing to all people, such that we assume a contestant whose family is Korean automatically feels some special pride on behalf of someone whose family is Japanese?"

I would prefer they do random assignments. Or maybe assign people based on their emotional IQ. Every team gets a jerk and a peace maker.

And they are going to have 20 PEOPLE.. Oh my gosh. That is a lot to care about and follow story lines. I don't know how I feel about the 4 tribe format.
