Last year as I was writing about Korean holidays, I focused on the “official” Korean holidays. This year, for some reason, I started wondering how the Korean people celebrate some of the holidays that I celebrate. Are they the same? How are they different?
In my family, we’re getting ready for Easter. Easter was not listed on the Korean official holiday list, but I am aware that over half of Korea is currently Christian so I figured there had to be something out there about it. Here in the United States, Easter is often associated with the Easter Bunny and colored eggs before it’s associated with Christianity anyway.
I did a search and I couldn’t find much. Easter doesn’t seem to be quite the phenomena that it is here. I couldn’t find any references to the Easter Bunny, egg hunts or chocolate-filled baskets. I did find verification that Christian part of Easter is celebrated by churches, but that was it. It’s amazing how things catch on in some parts of the world, but not in others. Who’s idea was the giant egg delivering rabbit anyway?

Easter aside, it is almost Arbor Day in Korea (April 5). I wrote about Arbor Day last year and quite frankly I forgot all about it until now this year. I really wanted to plant a tree for Arbor Day this year. However, I do try to remind myself that Arbor Day can be any day of the year. So, I’ll try to plant my tree soon.
