Dry Skin and My Son

Awhile ago I wrote a post on Koreans and dry skin. I have it and I hate it, but I hate eczema more. It is so hard to explain to my two year old son why he itches so much.

I noticed the other day that he had a bad rash, but that it was underneath his hair, behind his ears and around his neck. With all of the 90 degree weather we’ve been having, I thought it was a heat rash. I used to get those when I was little and, with his predilection for rashes, it made sense that he might have it too.

Well, I’m pretty sure that it’s eczema now. When he first was diagnosed, I read a lot, but some of that (over the past two years) has been lost or shuffled behind the myriad of other parenting tidbits I’ve had to read and store. However, I did remember reading that sometimes sweat can be a trigger. The bells and whistles went off and that’s what we think is happening. When he gets hot, he sweats…when he sweats, his eczema breaks out. Looking back, I wonder if I didn’t have a minor form of eczema when I was little.

We have the prescription lotion, but I hate using it if I don’t have to. We’ve been using it lately to see if we can get rid of the majority of the rash and then we’ll go back to his regular lotion. Unfortunately, there’s not much I can do to prevent it. I can’t keep him inside in the air conditioning all the time. He loves being outside and he needs to be outside to get fresh air.

I hate to see my son suffer, but I think that I suffer more than he does. If anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions. (Hats don’t work either. That hasn’t worked since he figured out how to take them off.)

I have dermatitis/eczema on my scalp that bothers me most when I am sweaty, under a lot of stress, or when I eat of a lot of sweets. i've been told by my doctors that usually eczema is a result of an undiagnosed food allergy, so allergy testing may be an option for your son if it continues to bather him as he grows older. The testing itself isn't much fun (my brother had it done)so I have just learned to live with the itching...and it usually looks worse than it feels. Hydrocortizone cream works as well for me as the prescriptions my doctors gave me, and has fewer side effects, i.e. doesn't make you super sensitive to sunbrun.

My son has eczema too and we use Eucerin every night after his bath. We use the generic kind prescribed by his doc at the Naval Hospital, but I have seen it at Target as well. It works great. I do notice that when he has milk it gets a bit worse, same with sweating. As long as I slather him up every night we seem to keep on top of it...on really dry days we slather twice.
