Well, if you’ve made your decision to adopt again or at least you can breath normally when you think about it, you also have decide about the agency that you are going to use.

For some, like us, it’s already set. We had a good experience with the agency that we chose for our son and we have no plans to choose a different agency. This is the easy way. I know that some people did not have the same kind of luck with their agency. Some didn’t like the agency that we used.

So, if you didn’t like your first agency, what can you do to help yourself find one that you will like?

1. Search for agencies in your state that support Korean adoption. Because Korean adoption has been going on for so long, they have had time to refine their choice of agencies. There are a lot fewer of them then there are for other countries.

2. Isolate the reasons that you didn’t like the first agency. If you know exactly why you didn’t like them, it will help you avoid the same problems with a new one.

3. Try to look at your list as objectively as possible. When you are in the middle of an adoption, emotions are high and it is easy to distort small things. Remembering that an agency has little control over the two governments (U.S. and Korea) helps to put things in perspective.

4. Make a list of the things that you are really looking for in an agency. Call the other agency or agencies and talk with some people. See what they have to say. Choose the one that you think will be the best for you.

Someone once told me that they thought that adoption was the easy way. I don’t think that she was deliberately trying to be insulting so I didn’t get upset. Walk a mile in my shoes…

No kidding - I think every parent should have to have to explain to strangers why they want to be parents, be fingerprinted by the government, deal with immigration and have a 3 inch binder FULL of paperwork on their child. I joked with my husband that after all that.....going into labor actually looked good!! :) We are starting the process to adopt a baby girl - bring on the epidural - here we go again!!

Good tips. We were very happy with the agency we used for our first child. But for our second adoption we found an agency that had a much shorter time to referral. I'm so glad I took the time to research agencies again the second time. It enabled us to have our children closer together. Good luck with the process this time around!

I found it helpful to write down the questions I wanted to ask and left room for each agency's response. It helped for me to compare each one easily during the "Agency Interview Process." I love our first agency, but will have to another for our next because we are moving to a different state.
