Awhile back, I wrote a (kind of) book review about the Beacon Street Girls. The “kind of” was because I was having a hard time opening up their sample chapters.

To my surprise, there was an e-mail waiting for me when I got home from work. The e-mail was from Bobbie Carlton (Marketing Director for the Beacon Street Girls series). Thanks to the wonderful world of Google Alerts, she knows when anyone writes about her books. Anyway, to make a short story shorter, she mailed me two of the Beacon Street Girls books – “Promises, Promises” and “Letters From The Heart.”

It is just the type of story that I enjoyed when I was a pre-teen – a light, easy to ready story (with some lessons thrown in for the fun of it). It has all of the required angst that comes with the age. I would have liked this book no matter who the charters looked like, but it is an added bonus that one of the main characters (Avery) is a Korean adoptee. No question – a book series with a Korean adoptee charter (even one who has a very different personality than mine) is special. The best part is that they aren’t all about Korean adoption. After all, being a Korean adoptee does not always consume our lives. So, I hope this series is still around if our second child turns out to be a little girl.

…from Promises, Promises (p.9)

“Well, the President of the United States thing is not going to happen, Avery,” Katani reminded her. “You have to be born in the United States to be President of the United States.”

“Big Deal! So I’m adopted. I’m a citizen, just like you guys. So what if I spent the first four months of my life in Korea? I’m as American as…”

“Apple pie…?” Isabel suggested.

Since I remember my pre-teens as a rather hormone driven time, this kind of book could help drive some conversation…or at least give your child a private outlet for thought. I remember being particularly ticked off about the whole President issue. I never wanted to be the President (still don’t), but it was the principle of the matter. If I wanted to be the President…

For those of you with young female Korean adoptees…check out the Beacon Street Girls. And because I know I sometimes pick up readers from the other Adoptionblogs.com readers…it seems to be a good multi-cultural series.
