Current Events – Trenton Duckett

Posted by : Mo in Korea Adoption Blog at 12:30 pm , 277 words, 239 views
Categories: Korea - Current Events and Adoption News, Korea - Book Reviews

In the article, Duckett Investigators Talk To Experts In Korean Adoptions, it talks about how the investigators are seriously looking at the possibility that Trenton Duckett’s mother may have sent her son to Korea.

For those of you who haven’t heard about Trenton, he is the son of a Korean Adoptee (Melinda Duckett). Melinda reported her son missing and then, shortly after, committed suicide.

Trenton's mother, Melinda Duckett, was adopted from Korea to a family in the U.S., and she had told at least one co-worker that she wanted to expose her son to the Korean culture. Detectives... more

Treatment of Biracial Koreans & More

This is a topic that interests me. It’s something that I wasn’t very aware of until I started blogging. I had a vague idea that things weren’t one hundred percent, but until I started reading about Hines Ward, I didn’t realize how bad the situation had become.

The article “Treatment of Biracial Korean a national disgrace” by Gwon Su-hyeon intrigued me on more than one level. First I am always amazed... more

Korean American Day – January 13th

I missed it. Actually, I didn’t even know it existed until I read the article in The Korea Times. Well, I’ll know for next year.

Link: Korean American Day

It was the second year for the celebrations since the U.S. Senate designated Jan. 13 as Korean American Day in 2005 to commemorate the first Korean immigration to Hawaii in 1903 on that date.

It seems to me that they have a “special” day for everything now. Not that I begrudge anyone their special day, but they are getting hard to keep up with. Every time I turn around, someone is wearing a... more

Congratulations Ban Ki-moon

I have been sitting at my computer trying to come up with something witty and profound to share with everyone. Truthfully, I think that I’m just too tired to come up with anything. So, instead, I’m going to write my congratulations to Ban Ki-moon (the new Secretary General of the United Nations) and, most importantly, the first South Korean to hold the position. There is a full bio on the UN website.

On the front page of the UN website, there is a quote by Ban Ki-moon – “I believe that life is precious and must be protected and respected, and that all human beings have the right to live in dignity.” I hope he remembers... more

Korean Faces: Rain

So, I’m cruising through my e-mail and I see the KAAN newsletter in my inbox. I love KAAN and I love the information that it brings. Front and center is a link to Korea.net about a Korean singer named Rain. (Follow the link to see a picture.) Oh, I’ve heard of Rain before. You can’t surf the world wide web for Korean news and not know about Rain, but this time it was about a tour in the United States.

I do realize that the chances of him coming... more

Who's Helping Who?

We are all sick in my household again. I think that I had a mild case of strep throat again and my husband (once again) has it full force with fever, chills, sore throat, etc… My son is fine. The doctor says that if we get it again after this round that we need to bring my son in. She says if we get it again, most likely, he’s the carrier.

Anyhow, I’m short on time…as usual…so I’m going to throw this article out at everyone. I found it in the KAAN newsletter.

My Simple Gift and Some Korean Adoptee Links

Simple Gifts: Holiday Cards

Two of my aunts sent my son cards that were only for him. I’m awed by the pure joy that he expressed at receiving them. “My cards?” He asked. When I assured him that they were his, he carried them around for the rest of the night.

I enjoy holiday cards. I receive information from people that I don’t see very often. There are pictures of children with new outfits and smiles on their faces. They are happy and full of good wishes. Some come with stories of the past year and others are simply signed by the people we know.

On this one, I’m going to pass on some of my own thoughts. The below link is to my other... more

Biracial Korean Children

Link: Biracial Korean Children – Hines Ward

I am always impressed when well known people use their status to make statements and to do good things. Hines Ward, Pittsburgh Steelers football player, is hosting eight biracial children from South Korea.

In South Korea, the treatment of biracial children (and adults) has long been a problem. One of the reasons I get upset with some Korean adoptees is because they talk about South Korea as if it is the perfect... more

Korean Drama - Sky Forever

Okay, I know this is an extreme dramatization and I wasn’t fond of the graphics at the beginning, but this one really got to me. It is not for children. I think it’s because there isn’t any sound. It makes it that much more dramatic and memorable. In a rather macabre kind of way – I enjoyed it.

One of the things that it does remind me of is the fact that I could pass my birth family on the street (parents, siblings, cousins…) and I would never know. I can search faces for features that are like mine, but there are thousands of people who might have my same eyes, nose or facial structure.... more

I fell in love with this screen. However, I also just like this site. I’m not sure how I’ve missed it. It’s full of wonderful Korean items and I’m afraid they might get quite a lot of my money.
