Sometimes It's Nice To Just Be A Parent

I’ve been busy lately with very non-adoption oriented problems – lack of sleep, bedtime problems, potty training, cats who think my living room carpet is a litter box, etc… I joked with my boss that this past week-end I was going to be potty training four children (i.e. my son and three cats), but I was only partially kidding.

One of the things that I’ve noticed about Korean adoption (and it’s probably the same for all adoptions) is that people are always interested in the adoption part, but forget that you are also a parent who is going through all the normal things that parents go through. So many people think that a child’s behavior will be automatically linked to their adoption... more

Can You Make Them Like It?

It’s funny how things from the past suddenly resurface in your mind and you can’t quite shake them. Today, for some reason, I was thinking about a comment someone made on a message board a couple of months ago. They were talking about Korean schools and enrolling their children in Korean schools as a way to help them keep their birth culture. A few Korean adoptees responded to this thread with differing opinions on the positive nature of this decision. One adoptee supported the decision, one adamantly disliked it and one offered words of... more

Before I start talking about this article, I want to make a couple of things clear.

1. I like articles like this. 2. I like to read about adoption stories that have happy endings and I like reading about happy families. 3. My comments are entirely my own opinion and are not necessarily the opinion of any other Korean Adoptee – they are the sometimes rambling thoughts of this Korean Adoptee only.

Passing On Culture

My mother-in-law was talking about her friends on the way home from vacation. They are an Indian family (Asian Indian) and both parents were raised in India. They have two daughters (twins) who were born here in the United States.

She was commenting on what a shame it is that the girls don’t speak their parent’s native language. My mother-in-law has become the girls’ honorary grandmother so she is often at their home, soccer games, school events, etc…. She was telling me that the parents will talk to each other, but they will only talk to... more

I See Myself In Them

Our hotel was on the East Bay in Traverse City so there was a lot of sandy beach for my son to explore. When we arrived, the weather was pretty cool, but my son jumped right in the water. We didn’t even have time to get his shirt off. The next day we went out to the beach, but it didn’t last long. My son had figured out the night before that there was an indoor heated pool and suddenly the water on the beach was just too cold.

In the short time that we were on the beach, my mother-in-law and I sat on the beach chairs and watched my husband... more

Here is another blog that I haunt on a regular basis - Third Mom. I like her. She's a little edgy and fun to read. Recently, she wrote the following post and I thought other people might find it interesting.

A Korean Adoptee in Paris

My first time away from home without my parents was a doozy. No one ever can say that I do things small. When I was ten, I got on airplane to France to be a foreign exchange student for three weeks. What an experience that was.

Some people have said that I was too young to really understand the experience. I have to disagree. Part of the reason that it worked so well was because I was too young to understand the potential problems. After all, I was a ten year old girl who could barely say hello in French staying with complete strangers... more

Searching The Faces

My friend from Indiana was back for the week-end so we planned a get together today. It wasn’t fancy. We ordered pizza and salad and my friend A brought cookies. Though this will upset my mother’s sense of presentation, we had a simple lunch with plastic plates and forks. I know it lacks style, but the cleanup process only took a couple of minutes. The inventor of plastic plates is my hero.

I’m not sure if I mentioned it before, but two of my friends, A and J, had babies within the last two months. It is the third child for both of them. A had a... more

Two Korean Adoptees And A German Festival

Posted by : Mo in Korea Adoption Blog at 06:59 pm , 456 words, 57 views

What fun! Today, we went to a German Festival in Ann Arbor. A German group has this festival three times during the summer. They open up their private park to the public and there is beer (of course), dancing, German food and fun. This is the first year that we’ve gone (though they announced that they’ve been doing a version of this festival since 1938).

I was actually amazed by how much my son and I stood out at this festival. I was well aware that there would be quite a few people with blond hair and blue eyes, but I did think that there would... more
